Old Elbe Tunnel

Sight4.7 · 38 959≈ 45 minFree entry

A pioneering feat of civil engineering opened in 1911 to connect St. Pauli with the shipyards of Steinwerder. Two parallel 426-metre tiled tubes run 24 metres beneath the River Elbe. Pedestrians and cyclists descend via massive historic lifts inside the domed entrance pavilion. The tunnel walls feature ceramic tiles and whimsical glazed majolica reliefs depicting marine life, while the far bank provides panoramic views of Hamburg's skyline.

Highlights

  • Descent via vintage cage elevators inside the domed hall
  • Stroll through the 426-metre tiled underwater tubes
  • Glazed majolica reliefs depicting aquatic life and rats
  • Postcard views of the Landungsbrücken skyline from Steinwerder
