Walking along the beach, between Ca' Bianca and the Alberoni district, you will notice that an impressive dam was built, designed in the 1700s by the Venetians to protect the shores from erosion by the lagoon waters. It is a historic structure that was once made of stone and wooden piles, but, as you can imagine, it had a very short lifespan and was therefore replaced by this wall of large boulders. If we don't want to spend the whole day at the beach, or if we want to head out a bit later in the afternoon and stay until sunset, we go to the Murazzi. The word Murazzi is used to describe two things: the kilometers-long defensive walls made of impermeable white Istrian stone that protect Venice and the barrier islands from the sea, and a section of beach on the Lido.
