The Bajrakli Mosque is the only surviving active Islamic place of worship in Belgrade out of hundreds that stood during the Ottoman era. Built around 1575 in the historic Dorćol quarter, it features single-domed stone masonry resting on an octagonal drum and a slender stone minaret. Its name derives from the Turkish word bayrak (flag), as a flag was raised on the minaret to signal the call to prayer simultaneously across all city mosques.

Highlights

  • Only surviving 16th-century Ottoman mosque in Belgrade
  • Historic minaret that signaled prayer times across the city
  • Quiet stone courtyard with an ablution fountain in Dorćol
