Sanjusangendo is a famous Buddhist temple in Kyoto, established in 1164. Its 120-metre-long wooden hall ranks among the longest timber structures in Japan. Inside, visitors encounter an awe-inspiring sight of 1,001 life-sized gilded statues of the Thousand-Armed Kannon carved from Japanese cypress. The statues are guarded by 28 dramatic sculptures of protector deities, including striking representations of Thunder and Wind gods.
