Marseille's cathedral in Neo-Byzantine style took nearly half a century to build, from 1852 to 1893, to designs by Léon Vaudoyer and Henri-Jacques Espérandieu. The vast church is striped with bands of pale and dark stone, a signature of 19th-century Marseille architecture. Inside are mosaics and marble, and the parvis looks onto the Old Port and Fort Saint-Jean. It ranks among the largest churches erected in 19th-century France.
