One of Northern Germany's premier regional cultural museums was founded in Altona in 1863, when the district was still governed by the Danish crown. Its extensive collection preserves hundreds of thousands of artifacts tracing the cultural, artistic, and maritime history of the Elbe estuary and coastal regions. Highlights include an impressive assembly of carved ship figureheads, antique sailing models, regional folk dress, and marine art.
