Founded along the Ping River around 1286 by King Mangrai, Wiang Kum Kam was the original capital of the Lan Na kingdom before flooding forced a move to Chiang Mai. Buried beneath river silt for centuries, this lost city was rediscovered by archaeologists in the 1980s. Today, visitors can explore dozens of excavated brick temples scattered across a peaceful rural setting, highlighted by the striking stepped stupa of Wat Chedi Liam.
