The Basilica of Santa Prassede is an ancient Roman church commissioned around 822 by Pope Paschal I on the Esquiline Hill. It is celebrated for its extraordinary 9th-century Byzantine-style mosaics glowing with gold across the apse and triumphal arch. Its crown jewel is the Chapel of San Zeno, dubbed the "Garden of Paradise" due to its radiant vaulted gold mosaics. A niche preserves the Pillar of the Flagellation, brought from Jerusalem in 1223.
