The former Jewish Ghetto of Bologna (Ex Ghetto Ebraico) is located in the heart of the medieval center. A network of covered bridges, hanging bridges, and alleyways, the district looks just as it did in ancient times. Like most other places throughout Europe, the ghetto was created by decree of Pope Paul IV in 1555, which ordered the separation of Jews from the rest of the population in all territories of the Papal State.
