The oldest church in Lisbon, founded in 1147 by King Afonso Henriques following the Christian reconquest of the city. Its imposing Romanesque facade with crenellated twin bell towers and an ornate rose window resembles a medieval fortress. Having survived the devastating 1755 earthquake, it features a Gothic cloister with Roman and Moorish excavations and a rich treasury of sacred art.
