The Blue Mosque on Mesrop Mashtots Avenue is the sole surviving active mosque in Armenia and a prominent monument of Persian architecture. Commissioned in 1765–1766 by local ruler Hoseyn Ali Khan, it earned its name from its dazzling turquoise-tiled cupola and floral faience facade. Behind the gates lies a tranquil garden courtyard shaded by apricot trees, complete with a 24-metre minaret.
