The triumphal arch linking the two wings of the General Staff Building on Palace Square. Built in 1819-1829 to Carlo Rossi's design to honour the victory over Napoleon, it is crowned by the Chariot of Fame: a winged goddess in a six-horse chariot flanked by Roman warriors. Driving through the arch leads down Bolshaya Morskaya to Nevsky Prospekt, and visually the arch balances the Winter Palace across the square.
