The head temple of the Omuro school of Shingon Buddhism, founded in 888 by Emperor Uda after his abdication. The vast grounds include a five-storey pagoda, the goten, a former imperial residence with painted shoji, and a grove of dwarf Omuro cherries blooming in mid-April, later than most sakura. Entry to the precincts is free, with a small fee for the goten gardens. The Randen tram stops at Omuro Ninnaji.
