A late-18th-century basilica built to fulfil a vow by Queen Maria I and consecrated as the first church in the world dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The pink-and-white dome is visible from afar; inside lie the queen's tomb and the celebrated Nativity scene by Machado de Castro, a Christmas tableau of terracotta and cork figures. Its restrained interior somehow outshines the gaudier trappings of many Lisbon churches.
