The National Pantheon of Portugal occupies the Church of Santa Engrácia in Lisbon's Alfama district. Begun in the late 17th century, construction dragged on for nearly three centuries, giving rise to a famous Portuguese idiom for never-ending projects. The white Baroque edifice is crowned by a colossal dome, housing the cenotaphs and tombs of national icons, including fado singer Amália Rodrigues and football legend Eusébio.
