The Alexander Nevsky Lavra is Saint Petersburg's oldest monastery, founded by Peter the Great in 1710 to honor Prince Alexander Nevsky. The grand architectural complex features Baroque monastery buildings and the neoclassical Holy Trinity Cathedral designed by Ivan Starov. Within the monastery grounds lie celebrated historic necropolises containing the final resting places of iconic Russian composers, artists, and writers.
