The Kanheri Caves in Sanjay Gandhi National Park form one of India's largest rock-cut Buddhist complexes. More than a hundred cells, chaitya halls and viharas were carved into the basalt slope between the 1st century BC and the 10th century AD. A stupa, carved columns, stone monk beds and rainwater cisterns survive. A forest trail leads up to the caves through monkey and deer territory, with views over Mumbai from the upper terraces.
