The Gothic tombs of the Scaliger dynasty, who ruled Verona in the 14th century, tucked into a narrow alley behind the apse of Santa Maria Antica. The most lavish is Cansignorio's monument with its wrought-iron canopy and figures of knights and virtues; the family emblem of a ladder crowns each tomb. One of Italy's most striking funerary ensembles.
