A museum inside the historic Washington-Mason cable barn, where the beating heart of San Francisco's cable cars still runs: endless cables sweep beneath the glass floor, driven by giant sheaves on motors of hundreds of horsepower. Exhibits trace the funiculars' story from 1873 and the rebuilding of the network after the 1906 earthquake. Admission is free, and a real cable car ride awaits right outside.
