Penang's botanical gardens, laid out in 1884 by British curator Charles Curtis at the foot of the hills: 29 hectares of tropical trees, ferns and vines around a stream coming down from a waterfall. Rhesus macaques and monitor lizards roam freely — keep food out of sight. Paved loops suit an easy stroll, and trails lead onward toward Penang Hill through the well-known Moon Gate.
