Perched above the Vistula River, the Warsaw Citadel is a massive 19th-century fortress erected by Tsar Nicholas I following the 1830 November Uprising. Built to keep imperial control over Warsaw, it long functioned as a garrison stronghold and a feared political prison, most notoriously in the Tenth Pavilion. Today, the ramparts and moat are an open memorial park, also home to the modern Polish Army Museum and Polish History Museum.
