Friche la Belle de Mai is a cultural quarter grown out of a tobacco factory in the Marseille district of the same name. Artists moved into the empty halls in the 1990s, and the Friche has since grown into concert venues, galleries, a theatre, a bookshop and a radio station. In summer the rooftop hosts a beach with loungers and one of the finest views over the city. Site entry is free, with separate ticketed shows.
