Ireland's premier national necropolis was founded in 1832 by political leader Daniel O'Connell to provide a dignified burial ground for people of all faiths. Today it is the final resting place of over 1.5 million people, including iconic figures of Irish history such as Michael Collins, Charles Stewart Parnell, and leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising. O'Connell's own crypt is crowned by an imposing 55-metre Celtic-style round tower.
