The imperial summer resort on Kunming Lake, the largest surviving royal garden in China. A 728-metre Long Corridor is painted with thousands of scenes, the Tower of Buddhist Incense crowns Longevity Hill, and a marble boat rests by the shore. Razed in 1860 and rebuilt by 1888 — legend says with funds meant for the navy — it was where Empress Dowager Cixi escaped Beijing's summer heat.
