Adashino Nenbutsuji Temple rests peacefully on a wooded hillside in northern Arashiyama. Founded in the early 9th century by Kūkai to memorialize souls buried in the ancient communal graveyard, the temple grounds feature around 8,000 historic stone Buddhas and miniature pagodas. Behind the main hall winds an enchanting, crowd-free bamboo path, while in late August the Sento Kuyo festival illuminates thousands of stone figures with candlelight.
