An island quarter in the lagoon north of Venice, the world capital of glassmaking since 1291, when the furnaces were moved out of Venice for fear of fire. Workshops and showrooms line canals used as streets, quays and bridges open to everyone. Shop windows display the famous glass, while the churches of Santi Maria e Donato and San Pietro Martire hold ancient mosaics and paintings. The glass museum is ticketed; wandering the island is not.
