The French national church in Rome, consecrated in 1589 five minutes from the Pantheon. The reason to come is the Contarelli Chapel with three Caravaggio masterpieces from the life of Saint Matthew (1599–1602), including The Calling of Saint Matthew. Entry is free, but the chapel is dark: slip a €1 coin into the light box to light the paintings. Domenichino's frescoes adorn the interior; the church closes midday around 12:30–15:30.
