A neoclassical triumphal gate on Plaza de la Independencia beside Retiro Park, commissioned by King Carlos III and designed by Italian architect Francesco Sabatini between 1769 and 1778. Built of granite and limestone, it predated both the Arc de Triomphe and the Brandenburg Gate. The gate features five arches and differing ornamentation on its two facades, commemorating royal prestige.
