San Francisco's oldest art museum, named for journalist Michael de Young and opened in 1895 after the city's midwinter fair. The current building with its copper-clad facade by Herzog & de Meuron opened in Golden Gate Park in 2005, and the observation level of the Hamon Tower is free to visit. The collection ranges across American painting from colonial times to today, plus the arts of Africa, Oceania and the pre-Columbian Americas.
