The unassuming Capuchin Church on Vienna's Neuer Markt square is world-renowned for the Imperial Crypt (Kapuzinergruft) beneath its floor. Since 1633, this has served as the principal burial vault of the Habsburg dynasty, holding the ornate sarcophagi of 12 emperors and 18 empresses, including Maria Theresa and Franz Joseph I. While entering the friars' church is free, exploring the historic imperial vaults requires an admission ticket.
