The Balkans' oldest natural history museum was founded in 1889 by Prince Ferdinand as a royal collection and has occupied its building next to Sofia University since 1936. Nearly one and a half million specimens: taxidermy and skeletons of mammals and birds, fish, reptiles, insects, minerals and fossils. The halls are compact but densely packed; an hour or so makes a good visit, especially with children.
