A palm-shaped island dredged from the Persian Gulf in the 2000s: a trunk, sixteen fronds and a crescent breakwater some 11 kilometres long. Atlantis crowns the trunk, villas line the fronds and a boardwalk runs along the crescent with Dubai's skyline in view. A causeway links the island to the mainland, and a monorail climbs the trunk. Viewing decks are ticketed; the waterfront stroll and the evening fountain show at The Pointe are free.
