A hill in northern Paris and the city's highest point, about 130 metres above the Seine. From the late 19th century Montmartre became a haven for artists — Picasso, Modigliani and Toulouse-Lautrec worked here. Landmarks include the white Sacré-Cœur basilica, Place du Tertre with its portraitists and the last vineyard in Paris. Narrow lanes, stairways and the funicular keep the village spirit alive.
