A Tendai temple in the mountain valley of Ohara north-east of Kyoto, founded by the monk Saicho in 788. It is famous for the Yusei-en gardens: moss carpets scattered with tiny jizo statues and maples blazing crimson in November. The Ojo Gokuraku-in hall holds a statue of Amida, and paths lead past ponds and teahouses. Reach it by bus from central Kyoto, then stroll through Ohara's lanes.
