Bratislava's oldest fountain, standing on the Main Square: it was built in 1572 by order of Emperor Maximilian II, and was long known as the Maximilian Fountain. Atop the column rises a stone knight in armour — a figure that has become the city's unofficial symbol. For centuries the fountain doubled as the town's main water source; today it stars on postcards with the Old Town Hall behind it.
