A monumental 15th-century Gothic gate separating Prague's Old Town from the New Town. Begun in 1475 by master mason Matěj Rejsek, the tower was the official starting point of the Royal Route taken by monarchs to Prague Castle. Later used to store gunpowder, it gained its current name and was restored in the 1880s by Josef Mocker. Climbing 186 spiral steps leads to a 44-metre-high viewing gallery with sweeping panoramas.
