The historic walled citadel at the heart of Manila, established by Spanish colonizers in 1571. Encircled by three kilometres of massive volcanic tuff stone ramparts, bastions, and moats, it served as the political and religious seat of the Spanish East Indies. Within its perimeter lie cobblestone streets, Plaza Roma, Fort Santiago, and the UNESCO-listed San Agustin Church. Walking along the ramparts is free.

Highlights

  • Massive 16th-century Spanish stone fortifications and ramparts
  • Historic Fort Santiago and the Jose Rizal shrine
  • UNESCO-listed San Agustin Church, the oldest in the country
  • Cobblestone streets navigated by traditional kalesa horse carriages
