A network of tunnels and cisterns beneath the San Lorenzo quarter. Greeks began digging in the 4th century BC, Romans turned the channels into an aqueduct, and during the Second World War Neapolitans sheltered here from air raids. A guided tour descends some 40 metres: candle-lit passages and the remains of a Roman theatre hidden directly under apartment houses. The narrowest squeezes are optional, candle in hand.
