Albania's largest museum, opened in 1981 on Skanderbeg Square and famous for the monumental mosaic 'The Albanians' on its facade. Its pavilions trace thousands of years: Illyrians and antiquity, Byzantine icons, the independence struggle, partisan warfare and socialist realism. Since 2024 the building has been closed for a major EU-funded renovation; reopening is not expected before 2028, so check the news before travelling.
