This fascinating complex of ruins was once the city of Halicarnassus, built by the Carian king Mausolus after he moved his capital from Mylasa. Honestly, not much remains (much was reused for the castle), but the pre-Mausolean tombs and stairways, the old drainage system, the column drums, and the narrow entrance to Mausolus's tomb all evoke memories of the old city and the Mausoleum, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Admission to Ancient Halicarnassus costs 70 TL (about £2).
