Ireland's oldest university, founded in 1592 under Elizabeth I. The campus of lawns, arches and Georgian facades is free to wander, and lectures still run inside the 18th-century buildings. Its chief treasures are the Book of Kells, made around the year 800, and the Long Room library, where 200,000 of the oldest volumes stand under a barrel vault lined with marble busts. On warm days the lawns fill with students and visitors.
