San Carlo Theatre

Sight4.8 · 9 5354.7 · 4 638≈ 38 minEntry: ~9 €184 m from the center

The oldest working opera house in the world, opened in 1737 under the Bourbons — 41 years before Milan's La Scala. Its rings of boxes, rebuilt after an 1816 fire, are famed for near-perfect acoustics; Rossini and Verdi premiered operas here, and much of the operatic canon was born in Naples. Visits run as short guided tours through the auditorium, the royal box and the stage. For the full experience, book an evening performance.
